Why We Built Chipon: The Story Behind Nigeria's Safety Intelligence Platform

In December 2025, a close friend called me at 2 AM. His voice was shaking.

He'd been driving back from a late dinner on the Lekki-Epe Expressway when he ran into an unmarked roadblock — not a police checkpoint, but something else entirely. Three men with flashlights, waving him down. No uniforms. No vehicles with plates. Just a dark stretch of road and a bad feeling.

He didn't stop. He drove through. He was lucky.

But as he recounted the story, one detail stuck with me: “If I'd known about it five minutes earlier, I would have taken the other route.”

The Five-Minute Gap

That phrase — five minutes earlier — became the seed of everything Chipon would become.

Because here's the thing: someone did know about that roadblock before my friend encountered it. Someone drove through that same stretch 10 minutes before him and made it through. Someone else turned back. A nearby resident probably heard something.

But none of that knowledge was accessible to my friend in the moment he needed it. It existed in fragmented WhatsApp groups, in local knowledge that doesn't travel, in experiences that get shared over drinks the next day instead of over airwaves in real-time.

The information existed. The infrastructure to share it didn't.

What Doesn't Work

Before building Chipon, we studied every existing approach to safety information in Nigeria:

  • News media — Hours of delay. Covers less than 5% of actual incidents. Urban bias toward dramatic stories.
  • Social media (Twitter/X) — Real-time but noisy, unverified, impossible to filter geographically. You see everything and nothing at once.
  • WhatsApp groups — Hyperlocal but fragmented. You need to be in the right group at the right time. Information doesn't flow between groups.
  • Police/LASTMA alerts — Institutional. Slow. Focused on traffic, not personal safety. Limited geographic coverage.

None of these were designed to answer the question my friend needed answered: “Is my specific route safe right now?”

The Chipon Thesis

We built Chipon around three beliefs:

  1. The crowd knows first. In any incident, ordinary people on the ground have information before any institution does. A platform that captures and distributes this knowledge in real-time is more valuable than any official alert system.
  2. Safety intelligence should be a utility, not a luxury. You shouldn't need to be wealthy, well-connected, or in the right WhatsApp group to know if your route home is safe.
  3. Data compounds. Every report, every verification, every interaction makes the system smarter. Over time, Chipon doesn't just show you what's happening — it shows you what's likely to happen, based on patterns.

From Idea to Platform

We started with a deliberately minimal scope. No family tracking. No SOS buttons. No AI chatbots. Just three things:

  1. A map that shows you safety conditions around you.
  2. A report flow that lets you share what you see in under 30 seconds.
  3. A community verification system that separates signal from noise.

Everything else — route scoring, neighborhood intelligence, smart notifications — grew from these three primitives.

Where We Are Now

Chipon is live in Lagos, with expansion to Abuja and Port Harcourt underway. We process data from community reports, news intelligence, and international security databases. Our safety scores cover every neighborhood in our operating area, updated daily.

But we're still at the beginning. The vision isn't just a safety app — it's a safety infrastructure layer for African cities. A utility that's as essential as Google Maps but for the dimension of life that Google doesn't map: how safe is it here, right now?

My friend is fine. He moved on from that night. But I didn't — and that's why Chipon exists.
